Chasing Wapiti: Final Test for the Savage 110 UltraLite Elite

After Savage launched the 110 Ultralite Elite at SHOT Show in January of 2024 I could not wait to get it in the field and put it through the gauntlet of our up-coming hunts.  We had several hunting trips planned for the year that this rifle would be absolute PERFECT for, it’s almost like they built it specifically to match up with our 2024 hunt calendar.  We first took it to Africa in the spring and what a joy it was to carry, Africa is HOT, and that sun wears you out really quick.  Weighing in at only 5.8lbs this thing saved my bacon toting it around the bushveld in 100-degree heat for 7 plus days of hunting.

Fast forward to September and I was able to get the 110 Ultralite Elite up into the high country of Southeast Colorado chasing the mighty Elk.  Again, a perfect place to wield this purpose-built rifle.  For this project Savage partnered with MDT and utilized a HNT26 chassis with carbon fiber forend, pistol grip and buttstock.  I have said it before, I LOVE a pistol grip bolt gun for hunting, it’s so much more of a natural hand position for me and it greatly improves my comfort and accuracy.

The collapsible stock is perfect for all the in and out of the side by side or strapping it to your pack when hiking to glassing spots.  It is super functional AND, another of my favorites, the ability to adjust comb height and length of pull.  Two very important things that help improve comfort and accuracy.

We were lucky enough to be in elk for almost the entire hunt, we were just waiting on the right bull and the right opportunity.  We set out on the afternoon of day three and happened to see a nice bull get up from his morning bed.  We had the wind, the sun and the terrain in our favor, it never works out like that!  We were quickly able to get within a couple hundred yards and get setup and take the shot across the valley floor.  The bull died within just a few feet of his bed while he was starting his afternoon graze.  He was a beautiful mainframe 6×6 with an extra point on each side technically making him a 7×7!  None of that mattered to me as I just see burgers and jerky when I look at an elk and not antler points.

To say that the 110 Ultralite Elite passed its final test would be an understatement.  This thing is jam-packed with features and something you HAVE check out!  Savage continues to flood their pipeline with technology and innovation and for the past few years have been one-upping themselves with all the new products hitting the market.  This one is going to be a tough one to beat but I am sure they will figure out a way to top this one yet again.

Andy has been a lifelong Outdoorsman and has hunted and fished all over the world but his home state of Michigan is near and dear to his heart. He grew up fishing the Great Lakes and mostly hunted waterfowl and small game until his teenage years when he quickly became an avid big game hunter and embraced the art of long range shooting. With the help of several long range courses he has become proficient at shooting out to 1,000 yards with his longest confirmed shots being in excess of 1,700 yards. He has hunted North America from the northernmost parts of Alaska to the southernmost parts of Florida and everywhere in between. He has even made the trip across the pond several times to hunt in Africa. When he is not hunting or fishing he is coaching travel softball and watching his two daughters play the sports they love. In between hunts and when they have a break from sports he and his family enjoy spending time outdoors in the beautiful state of Michigan skiing, boating and camping.
